Fort Amherst, based in Chatham, Medway, Kent, is Britain’s largest Napoleonic Fortress and provides a great day out for all the family. If you are looking for days out in Kent or the Medway area, then come and discover how Chatham dockyard would have been defended along with:

  • Over 300 years of military history with an amazing network of underground passageways, historic buildings and gun emplacements all set in 20 acres of beautiful parkland.
  • Take a tour of the incredible tunnel defences, enjoy some light refreshments in our Café or take a stroll to the highest point of the Fort and enjoy the spectacular views over the River Medway and the towns of Chatham and Rochester beyond.
  • Explore one of Kent’s most haunted locations on spine chilling Ghost Tours or stay until the early hours on one of our Paranormal Investigations.
  • Hire the Fort for your special private event. We have many different locations on the site; just call us to discuss your requirements.

"We had a great time at Fort Amherst - it was obvious that all of the volunteers had gone out of their way to ensure that the birthday ghost tour was a complete success. The girls were scared from the moment they set foot in the tunnels - that's when the screaming started and it didn't really stop until we got back out into the daylight!  The misty atmosphere, together with the eerie stories, really set the scene and kept everybody completely engrossed (and, in some cases, petrified!) throughout."

"I would just like to thank you for a brilliant night. The ghost evening was a fantastic insight into the world of Fort Amherst, which my family and I really enjoyed. The guides were friendly, knowledgable and just as scepticle as the rest of us. I felt completely safe in their hands for the night, thank you."

Fort Amherst is a wonderful educational resource for those studying Napoleonic history, 2nd World War history and also local Medway history.  The Fort, is Europe's best preserved example of a Napoleonic Fortress, with over 750 metres of tunnels carved into the chalk cliffs and our historic gatehouse where the soldiers would have lived.

We welcome school groups and can arrange a tour of the tunnels with one or more of our trained guides tailored to the specific age group of the children. School Groups are also very welcome to picnic in our extensive grounds and there is even a children's play area.

Educational Tours take 1 - 1.5 hours are priced at £3.50 per child and include an Educational Pack for each child with a question sheet to fill in and a timeline showing key dates in the Fort's history.

We offer one free teacher place for every 10 children and can supply teacher packs which include background information and answer's to the children's question sheets.

Small gifts and souvenirs are available in our Visitor Centre which is open every day from 10am until 4pm and also serves hot and cold drinks, ice creams and light meals.

"Fort Amherst is a wonderful place to visit, because it is a mix between war time and Napoleonic times. Our tour guide (Neil) made it very easy to understand. I found it very interesting and would love to go there again."

"Our visit to Fort Amherst today was superb, we had a tremendous tour guide that was dressed as a pirate and he taughts us so much."

Year 5 pupils: St Margarets at Troy Town Primary School.
